Angels Sign Mat Latos

Sep 29, 2015 7:02 AM

The Los Angeles Angels have signed Mat Latos.

Latos has been placed on the 40-man roster. They cleared room by placing Rafael Lopez on the 60-day disabled list.

He won't be eligible for the playoffs should L.A. qualify, but Latos can pitch in the final week of the season.

Rajai Davis Wants To Remain With Tigers

Sep 28, 2015 11:54 AM

Rajai Davis would like to remain with the Detroit Tigers, but the decision isn't entirely up to him.

Davis, who will be a free agent this winter, was in the starting lineup on Sunday.

"Absolutely," Davis said of returning to Detroit. "But it's up in the air. It's not really totally in my hands."

Davis would appear to be a fit in the outfield for the Tigers in 2016 regardless of what route the Tigers choose to take in left field.

Cardinals Still Hope To Re-Sign Jason Heyward

Sep 28, 2015 5:13 PM

The St. Louis Cardinals traded for Jason Heyward last offseason, planning to use the 2015 season as time to evaluate whether or not they should re-sign the outfielder.

Word is that St. Louis aspires to re-sign Heyward, even though they recognize it might take another team to help frame his value.

"This is ideal for a player like myself," Heyward said. "They show a lot of appreciation for me. Whether it's hitting two home runs in one game or throwing somebody out to win a game or making a play running the bases, just hustling. I'm trying to do anything to win and people see that. That's what they care about. They're not looking at overall statistics. There are a few (teams) that would fit me, and here is one of them. That stands out. For me, it stands out especially."

Entering Saturday, Heyward leads the team with a .288 average and 23 steals.

"He's been an extraordinarily important part of this club," John Mozeliak said. "You think about where we are today with (seven) games left in the season – his contributions have been extremely positive."

Mozeliak went on to say Heyward is "hitting free agency at a very unique time."

Nationals Could Target Gerardo Parra In Free Agency

Sep 24, 2015 7:52 AM

The Washington Nationals have a number of holes to fill this offseason and pending free agent Gerardo Parra could be one of their targets.

The club knows Parra well from the time Mike Rizzo and Matt Williams spent in Arizona.

Rizzo was the Diamondbacks scouting director when Parra was signed out of Venezuela in 2004, and Williams was on the coaching staff there when Parra won two Gold Gloves.

The Nationals were interested in Parra before they acquired Denard Span to be their leadoff hitter and everyday center field in 2013 and again before the July 31 trade deadline this season.

Boras Won't Rule Out Extension Talks For Xander Bogaerts

Sep 24, 2015 6:30 PM

Scott Boras hasn't ruled out a possible contract extension for client Xander Bogaerts with the Boston Red Sox.

Boras has a history of preferring to wait for his clients to reach free agency rather than potentially sacrificing money early in their careers.

"Look, I always tell every team and every player, we're an open door," Boras said. "Anything they want to look at and offer, and then the player just has to make his judgments, so we evaluate that.

"So I did all of these studies of [Bogaerts] and even a great player like [Derek] Jeter, he was more home runs, more RBIs, and he's made more playing time in the big leagues at 22 than Jeter had. So when you're talking about a player at that level, that great, to be ahead of him in many ways, you can really see where Xander and the organization in combination have worked hard to get him to that level, so it's nice to see."

Sources: Ah-Seop Son Plans To Enter Posting System

Sep 23, 2015 7:21 AM

Korean outfielder Ah-Seop Son plans to enter the Major League Baseball posting system this offseason, according to sources.

Son, 27, is a left-handed hitting, right-handed throwing corner outfielder. He hits more for average than Jung-Ho Kang, who has flashed power with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 5-foot-9, 190-pound Son has hit better than .300 for six consecutive seasons with the Lotte Giants of the Korean Baseball Organization.

MLB Shortens Signing Timeline For Cuban Players

Sep 21, 2015 4:44 PM

Major League Baseball declared on Sunday that young Cubans Jonatan Machado and Omar Estevez are free agents with eligibility to sign as part of this year's July 2 class.

Previously, the league had strictly enforced its general requirement that players seeking to sign as part of a given July 2 class register with the league by May 15 of the year in which they would become eligible to sign.

Overall, the league has granted exemptions to a dozen total players, according to a report by Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com. All of those situations have been resolved on a “case-by-case basis."

Reds Looking To Add At Least One Starting Pitcher This Winter

Sep 22, 2015 7:24 AM

Walt Jocketty doesn't think the Cincinnati Reds are that far away from contending and is planning to "retool" this winter.

The Reds traded away pitchers Mike Leake and Johnny Cueto at the July deadline to help build for the future.

"This was the time you kind of step back and rebuild it a little ... not rebuild, but retool," Jocketty said. "We're not that far away."

Jocketty says Cincinnati will look to add at least one veteran pitcher this offseason and perhaps more.

Giants Could Bid On Yoenis Cespedes

Sep 21, 2015 6:44 AM

The San Francisco Giants have a solid core with considerable money coming off the payroll this winter, which could make them a suitor for Yoenis Cespedes.

San Francisco entered play on Monday at 78-71, 7.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. They are further back in the race for one of the league's two Wild Cards.

There is speculation within other organizations that the Giants will pursue Cespedes, although he may be pricing himself out of the club's comfort zone with his recent play as a member of the New York Mets.
